Day 1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Begin in dense montane rainforest, trekking steadily up to Machame Camp on the edge of the moorland zone.

Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Climb above the forest line onto open moorland, reaching Shira Camp with your first clear views of Kibo's summit.

Day 3

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Trek up to the Lava Tower (4,600m) to aid acclimatization, then descend into the Barranco Valley to camp below the towering Barranco Wall.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

A short but steep morning scrambling up the Barranco Wall, followed by an easier crossing of ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Continue up to Barafu ("Base") Camp, where you'll rest and prepare for the summit attempt that begins in the early hours of the next morning.

Barafu to Summit & Descent to Mweka Gate

A midnight start for the push to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point, before descending all the way down through Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate.
